Car Lighting Upgrade Guide: LED, HID and Halogen

AutoParts Pro Editorial Team2026-06-13

Upgrading your car's lighting improves nighttime visibility and safety. Modern LED and HID options offer significant improvements over traditional halogen bulbs.

Halogen Bulbs

Standard equipment on most vehicles. Affordable and easy to replace, but produce less light and use more energy than modern alternatives. Premium halogen bulbs like Philips RacingVision offer up to 200% more brightness.

HID (Xenon) Headlights

HID bulbs produce a bright white-blue light using gas discharge. They are 2-3x brighter than halogen and last longer. However, they require a ballast and may need professional installation.

LED Headlights

LED technology offers instant-on brightness, lower power consumption, and extremely long lifespan. Modern LEDs match or exceed HID brightness with better beam patterns and easier installation.

Bulb Types and Fitment

  • H1, H3, H4, H7, H8, H11: Common halogen replacement sizes
  • 9005, 9006: Popular in American vehicles
  • D1S, D2S, D3S: HID bulb sizes
  • Check your vehicle's manual for the correct bulb type

Legal Considerations

In Europe, headlight upgrades must be ECE-approved for road use. LED retrofits in halogen housings may not be legal in all countries. Always check local regulations before upgrading.
